Like me, many have tried putting the miracles of Jesus in order. Despite what some claim, Jesus did not only perform 37 miracles1, and there’s no definitive order to them.
The truth is, the earliest sources, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, provide different accounts…

Contradictions in the Gospels? #
Whilst there are many similarities, there are differences too. Matthew records 50 miracles of Jesus. Mark give us 40 and Luke tells us about 46. John only records 33 of Jesus’ miracles! Some might say these are examples of Gospel contradictions. But here’s the interesting thing…
The apostles weren’t too concerned about the internal harmony of the Gospels. Papias, a 1st century Christian, tells us that St Peter:
“… had no intention of giving an ordered account of the Lord’s sayings.”
Exposition of the Sayings of the Lord2
I would argue this applies to his miracles too. But is it possible to know the chronological order of Jesus’ miracles?
Tatian’s diatessaron #
The diatessaron of Tatian was the first known attempt to bring harmony to the Gospels. Tatian was a 2nd century Christian, and his work was very popular. It was used authoritatively in Syriac-Christian communities until the 9th century!3 But what is the diatessaron?
Diatessaron means ‘through four’, referring to the four Gospels. Tatian attempted to combine Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and place them in chronological order into one book. Let’s see how Tatian’s diatessaron puts Jesus’ miracles in order…

The harmony of the Gospels #
According to Tatian’s diatessaron, the so-called 37 miracles become 98! Although the Gospel authors themselves did not provide a clear chronology, by placing the miracles of Jesus in order like this, I believe the diatessaron of Tatian shows it is possible to see harmony instead of contradictions in the Gospels.
