Who’s the current Pope?

Answer: #

Pope Leo XIV is the current Pope of the Catholic Church. Born Robert Francis Prevost, he was elected on 8th May 2025 and is the 267th Pope, or Successor of Saint Peter, in the history of the Catholic Church.1

His election marked several firsts:

  • The first Pope from the United States of America
  • The first Augustinian Pope in the history of the Church
  • The first Pope named Leo since Pope Leo XIII, who died in 1903

Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago but spent a large part of his priestly and episcopal ministry in Peru. He became a naturalized Peruvian citizen in 2015, making his life and ministry closely connected with both North and South America.1

Pope Leo XIV’s Short Bio #

Pope Leo XIV’s real name is Robert Francis Prevost. He was born on 14th September 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis Marius Prevost and Mildred Agnes Martínez. He is the youngest of three children and has two older brothers, Louis Martín and John Joseph.1

After finishing school, he studied at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in Mathematics in 1977 while also studying Philosophy. That same year, on 1st September, he entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). He made his first profession in 1978 and his solemn profession in 1981.1

He then studied theology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, receiving a licentiate in theology in 1981. After being ordained a deacon, he was sent to Rome to study Canon Law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, commonly known as the Angelicum.1

Robert Prevost was ordained to the priesthood on 19th June 1982 in the Chapel of Saint Monica in Rome. He received a licentiate in Canon Law in 1984 and later defended a doctoral dissertation on the role of the local prior in the Order of Saint Augustine.1

Missionary Work in Peru #

Much of Pope Leo XIV’s priestly life was spent in Peru.

In 1985, Father Prevost was assigned to the Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, in the Piura region of northern Peru. After a short period back in the United States, he returned to Peru in 1988 and served in the Augustinian mission in Trujillo.1

Over the following years he served in a remarkable number of roles, including:

  • Prior of his Augustinian community
  • Director of formation
  • Master of professed brothers
  • Director of studies and acting rector of the Major Seminary of San Carlos and San Marcelo
  • Professor of Canon Law, Moral Theology, and Patristics
  • Judicial Vicar
  • Parish priest

This long period in Peru became one of the defining parts of his ministry. He later acquired Peruvian citizenship on 24th August 2015.1

Leading the Augustinians #

In 1998, Father Prevost was elected Provincial Prior of the Augustinian Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel and returned to the United States.

Three years later, in 2001, the General Chapter of the Order of Saint Augustine elected him Prior General of the Augustinians, placing him at the head of the worldwide religious order. In 2007 he was elected to a second six-year term and served as Prior General until 2013.1

This meant that, before becoming a bishop or cardinal, the future Pope already had years of experience governing an international Catholic religious order.

From Bishop of Chiclayo to the Vatican #

On 3rd November 2014, Pope Francis appointed Robert Prevost Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, and Titular Bishop of Sufar. He was consecrated a bishop on 12th December 2014, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.1

His episcopal motto is In Illo Uno Unum. It comes from Saint Augustine’s exposition of Psalm 127 and expresses the idea that, although Christians are many, they are one in the one Christ.1

Pope Francis formally appointed him Bishop of Chiclayo on 26th September 2015. He later served as Second Vice-President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference and, for a time, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Callao.1

His responsibilities became global in January 2023, when Pope Francis called him to Rome and appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, also granting him the dignity of Archbishop.1

The Dicastery for Bishops has an important role in the process by which many new Catholic bishops are selected, so the appointment placed Archbishop Prevost at the heart of the governance of the universal Church.

Pope Francis created him a Cardinal on 30th September 2023, assigning him the Diaconate of Saint Monica. On 6th February 2025, Francis elevated him to the Order of Cardinal Bishops and assigned him the Suburbicarian See of Albano.1

How Did Robert Prevost Become Pope? #

The conclave to elect Pope Francis’s successor began on 7th May 2025. The following day, 8th May 2025, the College of Cardinals elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope.1

He chose the name Leo XIV.

The next day, 9th May, he celebrated his first Mass with the College of Cardinals in the Sistine Chapel. His Petrine ministry was formally inaugurated with Mass in Saint Peter’s Square on 18th May 2025.1

Why Did He Choose the Name Leo XIV? #

Pope Leo XIV explained his choice of name just two days after his election.

He said there were different reasons, but the principal one was Pope Leo XIII, whose 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the new social problems created by the Industrial Revolution.2

Leo XIV drew a parallel between that period and our own. Today, he said, another industrial revolution is unfolding through developments such as artificial intelligence, creating new challenges involving human dignity, justice, and labour.2

The name therefore gives an early clue to an important concern of his pontificate: how Catholic social teaching can respond to rapid technological change while keeping the human person at the centre.

Pope Leo XIV’s Pontificate So Far #

Although Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate is still young, several themes are already visible in his major teaching documents.

Love for the Poor — Dilexi Te #

On 4th October 2025, Pope Leo XIV issued the apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te (“I Have Loved You”), on love for the poor.3

Pope Francis had begun preparing the document during the final months of his life. Leo XIV made the text his own, added reflections, and issued it at the beginning of his pontificate. The exhortation emphasizes the close connection between love of Christ and care for people who are poor, weak, rejected, or suffering.3

Human Dignity in the Age of AI — Magnifica Humanitas #

On 15th May 2026, Pope Leo XIV issued the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence.4

The encyclical addresses the rapid development of digital technology, AI, and robotics. It recognizes the benefits technology can bring while warning that technological progress must remain ordered toward the good, the dignity of the human person, and the common good.4

This develops the connection Leo XIV made immediately after his election between Pope Leo XIII’s response to the first Industrial Revolution and the Church’s responsibility to respond to the technological revolution of the present age.
