Abba Philo is the name attached to the early Syriac ascetic text known as the Book of Steps, a fourth-century guide to the Christian life written in the Persian empire. The anonymous author’s thirty homilies on the ‘upright’ and the ‘perfect’ are among the earliest monuments of Syriac monastic teaching.
