Anselm of Canterbury

Anselm of Canterbury was an Italian monk who became abbot of Bec and then, reluctantly, archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, a Doctor of the Church. His Proslogion offered the famous argument for God’s existence, Cur Deus Homo explained the atonement, and his prayers and meditations founded a new devotional theology; he is honoured as the father of scholasticism.
