Boniface, born Wynfrith at Crediton in Devon, was a monk of Nursling who devoted his life to the conversion of the Germans. Consecrated bishop by the pope, he preached in Frisia, Hesse and Thuringia, became archbishop of Mainz and reformed the Frankish church before being martyred at Dokkum in 754; the Life of Saint Livinus is traditionally ascribed to him.
