Callistus I of Rome

Callistus I of Rome was a third-century pope, once a slave and a convict, who governed the Roman church from 217 to 222. His decree on the reconciliation of adulterers and murderers, denounced by the rigorist Hippolytus, fixed the church’s practice of penance; he died a martyr in a popular rising.
