Dhuoda of Septimania

Dhuoda of Septimania was a ninth-century Frankish noblewoman who, separated from her husband Bernard of Septimania and her sons, wrote the Handbook for William, a mother’s book of counsel for her absent boy. Her work, the only substantial Carolingian writing by a laywoman, is a treasury of the piety of the period and a moving monument of maternal love.
