Dicuil was an Irish monk and scholar working in Carolingian Francia in the early ninth century, probably attached to the palace school of Louis the Pious. He wrote a treatise on astronomy and the Liber de mensura orbis terrae, a survey of the known world which preserves measurements made by Carolingian surveyors and travellers’ reports reaching even to Iceland and Egypt.
