Dorotheos of Gaza was a sixth-century abbot of the monastery he founded near Gaza, formed in the school of Barsanuphius and John the Prophet. His Spiritual Instructions - humane, concrete and steeped in humility - became a standard of Eastern monastic reading, still prescribed for novices in Orthodox monasteries.
