Evagrius Ponticus

Evagrius Ponticus was a fourth-century deacon of Constantinople, disciple of Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, who withdrew to the Egyptian desert and became the most systematic teacher of early monastic prayer. His treatises on the eight passions, on prayer and on the spiritual life were condemned with Origen’s name but lived on as the hidden grammar of Eastern asceticism.
