Fabian of Rome

Fabian of Rome was pope from 236 to 250, chosen, the story ran, when a dove alighted on his head at the election. He divided Rome among seven deacons for the care of the poor, ordered the burial of the martyrs, and died in the Decian persecution as one of the first martyred popes.
