Josephus

Josephus was a first-century Jewish priest and general captured at Jotapata who became a Roman citizen and historian under the Flavians. His Jewish War and Jewish Antiquities - the latter containing the earliest non-Christian notices of Jesus, John the Baptist and James - made him the indispensable historian of Second Temple Judaism and a constant companion of Christian readers.
