Nicholas of Lyra

Nicholas of Lyra was a fourteenth-century French Franciscan and the most influential biblical scholar of the late Middle Ages. His Postilla litteralis, insisting on the literal sense informed by Hebrew scholarship, was printed beside the Glossa and shaped exegesis for centuries - ‘if Lyra had not played, Luther would not have danced’.
