Rabanus Maurus

Rabanus Maurus was a ninth-century monk of Fulda and archbishop of Mainz, pupil of Alcuin and the most prolific scholar of the Carolingian age. His encyclopaedic De Rerum Naturis, his commentaries on Scripture, his martyrology and his poems - including the hymn Veni Creator - made him ’the teacher of Germany'.
