Richard Challoner

Richard Challoner was an eighteenth-century English bishop, vicar apostolic of the London District, who shepherded the recusant church through decades of quiet persecution. His revision of the Douay-Rheims Bible gave English Catholics their standard text, and his devotional works - above all The Garden of the Soul - made him the father of English Catholic piety.
