Shenoute the Archimandrite
Shenoute the Archimandrite was a fourth- and fifth-century Egyptian abbot of the White Monastery near Atripe, the greatest figure of Coptic monasticism. His fierce rule over a vast community, his sermons and letters in Coptic, and his journey to the Council of Ephesus made him the father of Egyptian Christianity in its own tongue.
