Symeon the Metaphrast

Symeon the Metaphrast was a tenth-century Byzantine scholar and courtier remembered for the Menologion, the vast rewriting of the saints’ lives for the church’s calendar. His smooth retellings fixed the standard Byzantine form of hundreds of passions and lives and shaped the liturgical reading of the Orthodox world.
