Prayer of Saint Brendan

·6816 words·33 mins

Att text: The medieval manuscript tradition attributes the Prayer of Saint Brendan to St. Brendan himself, but this is not accepted as historical authorship. Brendan died around 578, whereas Salmon (1977) provisionally dated the prayer to the 8th century.

Salmon, P. (1977) ‘Oratio Sancti Brandani’, in Salmon, P., Coebergh, C. and de Puniet, P. (eds.) Testimonia orationis christianae antiquioris. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 1–30. (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis, 47).

1 [Rubric in the Sessorian manuscript: “Blessed Brendan, a monk, while seeking the Island of Promise, composed this prayer from the Word of God through Michael the Archangel, and recited it for seven consecutive years as he crossed the seven seas. Whoever sings or recites this prayer a hundred times, for himself or for a friend or family member, living or dead, with knees bent or body prostrate, shall have all his sins forgiven and shall be saved from the punishments of hell.”]

17 Ephphatha, which means “Be opened” [Mark 7:34]; in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

18 My almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one Trinity and one immeasurable Godhead in three Persons, who are, who were and who are to come [Revelation 1:4, 8; 4:8]. I beg you, O high Majesty, immeasurable and everlasting Power: may you, the triple Truth, protect me, and may you, the one Trinity, defend me; may you graciously pardon and forgive all my sins, past, present, future and impending. For all things are possible for you alone; at your word all things came into being [Genesis 1:1–3; John 1:3], and at your command they were created from nothing [2 Maccabees 7:28], namely, matter, angels and eternal souls. And just as from formless matter you fashioned, in six days, the form of all things and of every creature, each in its various kinds and proper forms [Genesis 1:1–31], so I beg you, Lord, to deliver me from the death of sin, from this mortality, from untimely death and the death of the soul, from every vice of mind and body and their countless offspring, and from every diabolical illusion.

19 Deliver me, Lord, who on the first day made light and separated it from darkness, and day from night [Genesis 1:3–5]—that is, the perfect angels from the imperfect. Deign likewise to deliver me from every power of Satan, from the devil’s schemes, from the snares of demons and from the temptations of their followers.

20 Deliver me, Lord, who on the second day established the firmament between the waters above and the waters below [Genesis 1:6–8]. Guard me, Lord, from every evil, from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head, within and without.

21 Deliver me, Lord, who on the third day formed the sea and the land, causing dry ground to appear, with trees and plants bearing fruit and producing seed within themselves, each according to its kind [Genesis 1:9–13].

22 Deliver me, Lord, who on the fourth day made the lights in the firmament of heaven—the sun, the moon and the stars—to serve as signs and to mark the seasons, days and years [Genesis 1:14–19].

23 Deliver me, Lord, who on the fifth day made the creatures that move and have life, the birds that fly above the earth, the great creatures of the sea, and every kind of fish and bird, fashioning them from the waters as living beings [Genesis 1:20–23].

24 Deliver me, Lord, who on the sixth day made every kind of beast, livestock and four-footed creature, each according to its nature, and formed humankind from the clay of the earth, breathing into his face the breath of life [Genesis 1:24–27; 2:7]. You created them male and female and blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky and all the livestock” [Genesis 1:27–28].

25 Deliver me, Lord, who on the seventh day blessed all your work and sanctified it, and caused humankind to rest from all labour [Genesis 2:1–3]. Thus may you deign to bless me, Holy Trinity, triple Godhead of one and the same essence. In your gracious, life-giving mercy, protect your creation through your boundless compassion, and forgive my sins.

26 I beg you, O nurturing Mercy, to forgive my sins through your boundless compassion.

27 I beg you, O high and immeasurable Majesty, through the hosts of angels—that is, through your holy angels, who announce and commend lesser matters generally to created beings, that is, to human beings.

28 Deliver me, Lord, through your angels, your chief messengers, through whom greater things are announced to humankind.

29 Deliver me, Lord, through your holy Virtues, through whom wondrous works are continually performed. [Colossians 1:16; Ephesians 1:21]

30 Deliver me, Lord, through the holy Powers, who command rule over evil spirits, preventing them from exercising cruelty in human affairs beyond what is permitted, so that they may not vent their fury upon me. [Ephesians 6:12; 1 Peter 3:22]

31 Deliver me, Lord, through the Principalities, who exercise authority even over good spirits, that the divine mysteries may be fulfilled. [Colossians 1:16]

32 Deliver me, Lord, through the Dominions, which surpass in dominion the five ranks mentioned above, whose members are subject to them through obedience. [Colossians 1:16]

33 Deliver me, Lord, through the Thrones, upon which you are seated, and through whom you execute your fearful judgements among your creatures. [Colossians 1:16]

34 Deliver me, Lord, through the Cherubim, who possess the fullness of knowledge and know more than the intellectual creatures beneath them. For, as they gaze more intently into the mirror of splendour, they reveal the hidden things of creation. [Ezekiel 10:1–22]

35 Deliver me, Lord, through the Seraphim, who burn and set aflame, and who burn more fervently with the love of God than any other rational creature. They surpass all creatures so greatly in honour that no other spirits stand between them and God. [Isaiah 6:2–7]

36 Deliver me, Lord, through these nine orders of holy angels. I beg you, Lord God, full of compassion and mercy, to grant me pardon and forgiveness for all my sins, past, present, future and impending, for you know our frailty, that we are flesh and dust [Psalm 103:14]. I ask this gift of you, Lord, through the intercession of Saint Peter [Matthew 16:18–19], and through the blood of righteous Abel, the first priest and martyr [Matthew 23:35; Hebrews 11:4]. Receive the voice of my prayer as a sacrifice of your praise [Psalm 50:14; Hebrews 13:15], just as you accepted Abel’s pleasing sacrifice [Genesis 4:4–10], restored Seth to his proper place, from whom sprang the lineage of the children of God [Genesis 4:25–26], and took Enoch up, who walked with you [Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5].

37 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Noah and his family of eight, together with all the animals in the ark, through the Flood [Genesis 6:13–22; 7:13–16; 1 Peter 3:20].

38 Deliver me, Lord, just as you rescued the whole earth, with all its fruits, from the Flood [Genesis 8:13–17].

39 Deliver me, Lord, as you delivered and accepted the bread and wine offered by Melchizedek the priest [Genesis 14:18–20]. So deign, Lord, to receive my voice as a sacrifice of your praise [Psalm 50:14; Hebrews 13:15]. Great things I ask of you, Lord, not because I deserve them, but through the generosity of your grace; and you know how to grant great gifts even to me, a sinner. I beg that you will forgive my transgressions daily [Matthew 6:12].

40 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Abraham from Ur of the Chaldeans [Genesis 11:31; 15:7] and from all his trials [Genesis 12:1–9; 22:1–19]. As you were with him in all things, so I beg you to be my unfailing help for ever.

41 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Lot from Sodom and from his enemies [Genesis 14:12–16; 19:1–29].

42 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Isaac from death by providing a ram in his place [Genesis 22:1–14], and just as you delivered him from his other trials.

43 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Jacob from the anger of his brother Esau and from Laban, and just as you remained with him [Genesis 27:41–45; 31:3–24; 32:1–21].

44 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Joseph from his brothers’ envy, from the lust of a woman, and from slavery and death; and just as through him you delivered Israel from famine [Genesis 37:4–28; 39:7–20; 41:46–57; 45:5–11; 47:11–12].

45 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Job from the trials brought upon him by Satan and his enemies, and just as you freed him from his affliction and restored all his possessions, together with a second generation of children [Job 1–2; 42:10–17]. I beg you likewise to restore me to sound and lasting health.

46 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Moses and Aaron from the power of the Egyptians, freed them from slavery, and rescued them from the ten plagues, the Red Sea, thirst, hunger and battles [Exodus 1–14; 16–17]. Just as you put the rebellious to death, preserved the obedient and gave your commandments to the people [Exodus 20:1–17; 32:25–29; Numbers 16:1–35], so I beg you to grant me the gift of knowing, understanding and keeping your testimonies.

47 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Moses and Aaron from the hostility of Israel [Numbers 16:1–35], and just as through prayer you delivered Joshua, son of Nun, and Israel in the battles against Amalek [Exodus 17:8–13], Sihon and Og [Numbers 21:21–35; Deuteronomy 2:26–3:11], and the twenty-nine kings of one Canaanite people [Joshua 11:16–23; 12:7–24].

48 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Phinehas and Israel in the conflict involving Balaam and Balak [Numbers 25:6–13; 31:1–8].

49 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Caleb from the faithlessness of the spies [Numbers 13:30–33; 14:6–9, 24, 30].

50 Deliver me, Lord, just as you brought Israel and the Ark of the Covenant safely across the Jordan [Joshua 3:1–17; 4:1–18].

51 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Rahab from Jericho [Joshua 2:1–21; 6:22–25], and delivered Joshua and Israel when the sun stood still over Gibeon and the moon over the Valley of Aijalon [Joshua 10:1–15].

52 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Shamgar when he struck down six hundred men [Judges 3:31].

53 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Israel through the counsel of Deborah [Judges 4–5].

54 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Gideon and his three hundred men in the battle against Midian [Judges 7:1–25].

55 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Jephthah the Gileadite and Israel from the power of the nations [Judges 11:1–33; 12:1–7].

56 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Samson, who had nothing in his hand, from the lion’s fury, which he overcame [Judges 14:5–6], and just as you delivered him through his many other trials [Judges 14–16]. Help me, Lord, and I shall be saved [Psalm 119:117; Vulgate Psalm 118:117]. And just as you preserved the sandals and garments of Israel for forty years [Deuteronomy 8:4; 29:5], I beg you likewise to preserve me and forgive my offences through your boundless mercy.

57 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the Ark of the Covenant from the temple of Dagon [1 Samuel 5:1–12], and just as you delivered Israel through Samuel’s prayer, when the Philistines fled and were terrified by the great thunder from heaven [1 Samuel 7:5–13].

58 Deliver me, Lord, just as you spared the land (Jerusalem?) when the angel struck down seventy thousand of Israel [2 Samuel 24:15–17; 1 Chronicles 21:14–17].

59 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered David from the fury of the bear and the lion, from Goliath and from Saul [1 Samuel 17:34–37, 40–54; 18:6–11; 19:8–17], and in three battles against the Philistines, whom you caused to retreat [1 Samuel 18:6–7; 19:8; 23:1–5]. Deliver Jonathan, son of Saul, and his armour-bearer from the Philistine outpost, through whose power you caused ten thousand to be slain [1 Samuel 14:1–23].

60 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the three mighty men of David who brought water from the well at Bethlehem [2 Samuel 23:13–17; 1 Chronicles 11:15–19], and Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, from the two lion-like warriors of Moab. He struck down another lion in a cistern on a snowy day and killed an Egyptian with a club, wrenching the spear from his hand [2 Samuel 23:20–21; 1 Chronicles 11:22–23]. Deliver me also as you delivered the prophet Aicam, the man of God sent from Judah to Bethel, when the altar was split and the king’s hand withered [1 Kings 13:1–6].

61 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Elijah the Tishbite of Gilead from the fury of Ahab and Jezebel, and from famine and persecution at the cave by the brook Cherith [1 Kings 17:1–7; 18:1–19]. Through his prayer, the heavens were closed so that no rain fell for three years and six months [1 Kings 17:1; 18:1; James 5:17]. The jar of oil did not fail, nor did the flour in the widow’s jar diminish, until God visited his people [1 Kings 17:8–16]. Elijah raised the widow’s son from the dead [1 Kings 17:17–24], whom many say was Jonah, later rescued from the belly of the whale [Jonah 1:17–2:10]. I beg you, Lord, through your boundless mercy, to deliver me from the depths of the mire of my evil deeds, for you are my refuge in the affliction that surrounds me [Psalm 32:7; Vulgate Psalm 31:7]. Forgive me my sins, past, present, future and impending, for all things are possible for you.

62 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Elijah, who slept beneath the broom tree, from persecution, famine and thirst, when he went forty days and nights without eating [1 Kings 19:1–8].

63 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the captain of fifty who knelt in supplication before Elijah, after two other captains and their companies had been consumed by heavenly fire [2 Kings 1:9–15].

64 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Elijah when he was taken up in a chariot of fire [2 Kings 2:1–12].

65 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Elisha when he received a double portion of the spirit and crossed the Jordan a second time, calling upon the God of Elijah [2 Kings 2:9–15]. You delivered him when he cast salt into the bitter, barren waters of Jericho and healed them [2 Kings 2:19–22], and when he was mocked by forty-two youths at Bethlehem (the biblical account places this at Bethel) [2 Kings 2:23–25].

66 Deliver me, Lord, just as through Elisha you delivered the people of Israel from thirst during the campaign of the kings of Israel and Judah [2 Kings 3:4–20]. Through him, you delivered a widow’s two sons from bondage by multiplying her small supply of oil [2 Kings 4:1–7]; you restored the son of a woman in the city of Praefania (possibly Shunem) [2 Kings 4:8–37]; and you delivered the sons of the prophets from death and famine when they unknowingly gathered poisonous gourds, which Elisha rendered harmless by putting flour into the pot [2 Kings 4:38–41].

67 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered a hundred men from famine, feeding them with bread so that an abundance of fragments remained [2 Kings 4:42–44].

68 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Naaman, the commander of the king of Syria, from leprosy in the Jordan [2 Kings 5:1–14], and just as you delivered the sons of the prophets from the depths of the Jordan [2 Kings 6:1–7], when, at your divine command, the waters returned over the Egyptians [Exodus 14:26–28]. Deliver me also as you delivered the city of Dothan from the Syrian army, when the Lord showed Elisha’s servant the visible ranks of fiery angels surrounding Elisha. Then the Syrians were struck blind through Elisha’s prayers and supplications [2 Kings 6:8–23].

69 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Samaria, the city besieged by King Ben-hadad, when the Syrian camp was put to flight at night by the sound of chariots, horses and a great army [2 Kings 6:24–7:20].

70 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered a hundred men from famine [2 Kings 4:42–44], and raised a dead man to life when his corpse touched the bones of Elisha in the tomb [2 Kings 13:20–21].

71 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered King Hezekiah from death and sickness, adding fifteen years to his life, with the sun turning back ten steps as a sign [2 Kings 20:1–11; Isaiah 38:1–8]. I therefore beg you, merciful Lord, through your abundant power, to deign continually to cleanse and wash me of all my impurities, just as you purified the prophet Isaiah through a Seraph from the uncleanness of his lips [Isaiah 6:5–7] and delivered him from many persecutions. Guard me, Lord, from all evil, from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head, within and without.

72 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the prophet Jeremiah from the defilement of Babylon and from persecution [Jeremiah 38:7–13; 39:11–14].

73 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the prophet Daniel from every distress, from the wrath of kings, from the lions’ den and from hunger [Daniel 6:1–28; 14:28–42].

74 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the three youths from the blazing furnace: Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael [Daniel 3:1–30].

75 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Susanna from false witnesses [Daniel 13:1–64], and Jonah from the belly of the whale [Jonah 1:17–2:10], and just as you delivered the repentant people of Nineveh through the preaching of the prophet Jonah [Jonah 3:1–10].

76 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel and all Israel after the seventy years of captivity [Jeremiah 25:11–12; 29:10; Ezra 1–2; Nehemiah 1–2].

77 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Judas Maccabeus and Israel through the Maccabees in their many dangers and battles [1 Maccabees 3–4], and just as you delivered the seven Maccabean brothers who chose martyrdom with their mother [2 Maccabees 7:1–42].

78 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Tobit from blindness and his son from the demon through the holy Archangel Raphael [Tobit 3:7–17; 6:1–18; 8:1–3; 11:7–15].

79 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Israel through Queen Esther, described here as the queen of the South, and just as you delivered Judith and Israel from the hand of Holofernes [Esther 4:13–16; 7–9; Judith 8–16]. So also, my God, deign to forgive my great and grievous sins, rescue me from the death of sin and from all the vices of soul and body, past, present and future. Have mercy, too, on the souls of my deceased father and mother, brothers and sisters, relatives, friends and benefactors, and on all those whose alms and benefits I have received, and for whom I have promised to pray. You are the rewarder of good deeds: by the grace of your Gospel, Lord Jesus Christ, reward them with heavenly blessings. I beg you, Lord Jesus Christ, to grant me pardon and forgiveness for all my sins through your merciful grace.

80 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Mordecai from the hand of Haman [Esther 6:1–11; 7:9–10; 8:1–2].

81 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the prophet Zechariah from muteness and Elizabeth from barrenness [Luke 1:5–25, 57–66], and deliver me from this mortal life, from untimely death and from every vice.

82 Deliver me, Lord, just as you preserved the most blessed Virgin Mary, your mother, from all corruption, and delivered the three Magi, bearing their three gifts, from the power of Herod [Matthew 2:1–12].

83 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered yourself, the most blessed Virgin Mary your mother, and Joseph when they fled into Egypt, while Herod put to death all the children in Bethlehem and its surrounding districts [Matthew 2:13–18]. Just as you delivered the human race through yourself and overcame the enemy, the devil, conquering him through gluttony, avarice and pride, the very things through which the first man fell [Genesis 3:1–6; Matthew 4:1–11], so also deliver me. Just as you healed the leper after descending from the mountain [Matthew 8:1–4], healed the Gentile centurion’s servant at Capernaum [Matthew 8:5–13], cured Peter’s mother-in-law of fever, and in the evening drove out demons and healed all who were ill [Matthew 8:14–17], so deliver me. Just as you commanded the sea and the wind to be still [Matthew 8:23–27], and healed the two demon-possessed men by sending the evil spirits into a herd of pigs [Matthew 8:28–34], so deliver me.

84 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the paralytic who had been carried on a bed for fourteen years, in whom three miracles were revealed: sins were forgiven, thoughts were answered, and the affliction was removed by a word [Matthew 9:1–8; Mark 2:1–12; Luke 5:17–26]. So deign to act likewise towards me, Lord Jesus Christ.

85 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the woman suffering from a flow of blood when she met you on the road, and raised the dead daughter of the ruler in his house [Matthew 9:18–26]. Just as you healed a deaf and mute man afflicted by a demon [Matthew 9:32–34; Mark 7:31–37], restored the withered hand in the synagogue on the Sabbath [Matthew 12:9–14], and healed the demon-possessed man who was blind and mute [Matthew 12:22–23], so deliver me.

86 Deliver me, Lord, just as you fed five thousand men, besides women and children, with five loaves and two fish, gathering the remaining fragments into twelve baskets [Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1–14].

87 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Peter when he walked upon the sea towards you during the fourth watch of the night, and just as you commanded the winds and the sea to be still [Matthew 14:22–33; Matthew 8:23–27]. Deliver also the many whom you healed by a single command in the region of Gennesaret [Matthew 14:34–36].

88 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the daughter of the Canaanite woman in the region of Tyre from the demon that tormented her, in response to her faithful, humble and wise reply [Matthew 15:21–28; Mark 7:24–30]. And just as you fed four thousand men with seven loaves and a few fish, leaving seven full baskets of fragments [Matthew 15:32–39; Mark 8:1–10], so deliver me.

89 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered them from hunger [Matthew 15:32–39; Mark 8:1–10], and keep me apart from every unrighteous deed, just as you raised Peter, James and John to witness your Transfiguration on Mount Tabor with Moses and Elijah, when your face shone like the sun and your garments gleamed like snow [Matthew 17:1–8; Mark 9:2–8; Luke 9:28–36].

90 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the boy who suffered from seizures, falling sometimes into fire and sometimes into water, whom your disciples could not heal [Matthew 17:14–20; Mark 9:14–29]. So deign to cleanse me from all evil, from every sin of body and soul, from the sin of Adam, from my own sins and from the sins of others. And just as Simon paid the two-drachma temple tax by your command, casting a hook into the sea and finding a stater coin in the mouth of a fish [Matthew 17:24–27], so deliver me, Lord.

91 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the deaf and mute man in the region of the Decapolis [Mark 7:31–37]. So deign to enlighten the eyes of my heart and body [Ephesians 1:18]. Lead me, Lord, in the path of your commandments [Psalm 119:35].

92 Deliver me, Lord, just as you opened the eyes of the two blind men who cried out to you, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David,” and bestowed sight upon them [Matthew 9:27–31].

93 Deliver me, Lord, just as you healed another blind man at Bethsaida [Mark 8:22–26]. I beg you, Lord, to draw me away from this impure flesh to a better state, and bring me to rest when you command my soul to depart from the body. Just as you delivered Peter the fisherman, who caught nothing throughout the night but, at your word, cast his net to the right and drew it to land scarcely able to manage it, so full was it of fish [Luke 5:1–11; John 21:1–14], and just as you raised the dead young man, the widow’s son, who lay upon a bier [Luke 7:11–17], so deliver me.

94 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the woman who watered your feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair, forgiving her grievous sins [Luke 7:36–50]. So deign to forgive all my sins and the vices of my body and soul.

95 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered and raised up a certain woman who had been bent over for eighteen years [Luke 13:10–17].

96 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the ten lepers whom you encountered near a certain town, and of whom one returned to give thanks [Luke 17:11–19]. So command, O merciful God, that my lamentation and supplication be turned into joy [Psalm 30:11; Vulgate Psalm 29:12]. And just as at Cana in Galilee, at a wedding attended by your disciples and your mother, you turned the water in six stone jars into wine [John 2:1–11], so turn my sorrow into gladness.

97 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, from the fourfold death of thought, despair, word and deed [John 11:1–44]. So command, my God, that I too may be raised to life.

98 Deliver me, Lord, just as you healed on the Sabbath, on a feast day, the man lying upon a bed beside the pool of Jerusalem, who had waited for the waters to move for thirty-eight years. You commanded him to rise and carry his bed, which he did on the Sabbath, despite the people’s objections [John 5:1–18].

99 Deliver me, Lord, just as you healed another blind man in Jerusalem, making clay with your spittle and anointing his eyes with it, after which he washed his face in water and received his sight [John 9:1–12]. And just as you healed the severed ear of Malchus, the servant of the high priest, which Peter had cut off with his sword [Luke 22:49–51; John 18:10–11], so deign to heal my soul. And just as you raised many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep after your Resurrection [Matthew 27:52–53], so grant me new life.

100 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered the souls of the dead in the underworld and rescued them by rising on the third day [1 Peter 3:18–20; Ephesians 4:8–10; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4]. After spending forty days with your Apostles, giving them many proofs of your Resurrection [Acts 1:3], you ascended in a cloud, in your true flesh, and sat at the right hand of God the Father, from whose presence you had never been absent [Acts 1:9–11; Mark 16:19]. There, in your goodness, deign to intercede for me and deliver me. And just as you sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the hundred and twenty assembled believers, in the form of fire, to purify and enlighten them [Acts 1:15; 2:1–4], so cause me also to be enlightened and cleansed of all my impurities.

101 Deliver me, Lord, just as many people were freed from bodily sickness through the shadow of Peter [Acts 5:15–16], and just as at the ninth hour you healed a paralytic through Peter [Acts 3:1–10]. You also delivered Peter after Herod had imprisoned him and an angel had led him out, whereupon he came to his senses [Acts 12:3–11].

102 Heal me, Lord, just as through Peter you healed Aeneas, who had lain paralysed in bed for eight years in the upper regions [Acts 9:32–35], and just as through him you raised Tabitha from the sleep of death at Joppa [Acts 9:36–42]. There, he saw a vessel descending from heaven over a high roof, containing all manner of creatures found on earth except humankind [Acts 10:9–16].

103 Deliver me, Lord, just as you delivered Paul from error when he was travelling to Damascus [Acts 9:1–19], and just as through him you raised Eutychus, who had died after falling from the window of an upper room [Acts 20:7–12]. Through him, too, you healed the father of Publius, the chief official of the island, of dysentery and fever [Acts 28:7–8].

104 Preserve me, Lord, just as you preserved Paul when he was bitten by a viper on the island of Malta [Acts 28:1–6], and when the Jews stoned him, leaving him almost dead [Acts 14:19–20]. You also preserved him when he suffered shipwreck and remained in the depths of the sea for three days and nights (as the text states), bringing him safely through his many trials [2 Corinthians 11:25; Acts 27:13–44].

105 Deliver me, Lord, just as many sicknesses were healed through the touch of Paul’s garments, and unclean spirits were driven out of those whose bodies they possessed [Acts 19:11–12].

106 I beg you, my almighty Lord God, through the abundance of your mercy, to deign to forgive all my sins, past, present, future and impending, for against you alone have I sinned [Psalm 51:4; Vulgate Psalm 50:6], and all things are possible for you [Luke 1:37]. I ask not according to my own deeds, but according to your forgiveness, your boundless goodness and your mercy, for I am not worthy.

107 I beg you, Holy Trinity, one in three and three in one: Truth, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I beg you through all your works, visible and invisible [Colossians 1:16], through the works of your hands, through all your powers and ways, through your words, through all your creatures and ministers, through the holy host of heaven, and through your entire holy Catholic Church, from east to west and from north to south. I beg you, Lord, through your boundless mercy, to grant me pardon and forgiveness for my sins, and throughout all time, even to the end, to deliver me from the death of sin and from every stain upon my soul and body. Forgive also the sins of the souls of my father and mother, brothers and sisters, relatives, friends, enemies and benefactors, both living and dead, and especially those for whom I have promised to pray.

108 I beg you, Holy Mary, Mother of God [Luke 1:43], and I adjure you all, the nine orders of angels, and Saint Michael [Jude 1:9; Revelation 12:7–9], Saint John the Baptist [Matthew 3:1–17], and the twelve Apostles [Matthew 10:1–4]:

110 Luke [Colossians 4:14], and all the saints, pray to the Lord for me, that he may deliver me from all impending evils and everlasting torments, from now and for ever, through him who is without beginning or end [John 1:1–3; Revelation 22:13]. Hail Mary, etc. [Luke 1:28, 42].

111 Pray for me, your unworthy servant, Holy Mary, Mother of God [Luke 1:43], most pure and devout Virgin:

The holy Virtues [Ephesians 1:21],
The holy Cherubim [Ezekiel 10:1–22],

113 Pray for me, a wretched sinner, that through your holy merits all my sins may be forgiven by the merciful Lord.

114 All angels and archangels [Hebrews 1:14; Jude 1:9], holy prophets and patriarchs [Hebrews 11:1–32], all the holy judges [Judges 2:16–19] and leaders, holy kings and Maccabees [1 Maccabees 3:1–9; 2 Maccabees 7:1–42], all the holy infants [Matthew 2:16–18] and God’s chosen ones [Colossians 3:12], intercede for me.

115 The Nativity of Christ [Luke 2:1–20; Matthew 1:18–25],
The Circumcision of Christ [Luke 2:21],
The Baptism of Christ [Matthew 3:13–17],
The works of Christ [Acts 10:38],
The power of Christ [Luke 4:36],

The soul of Christ [Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27],
The flesh of Christ [Luke 24:39],
The Spirit of Christ [Luke 23:46],
The Resurrection of Christ [Matthew 28:1–10],
The Ascension of Christ [Acts 1:9–11],

116 And the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter [John 14:16–17; Acts 2:1–4], may defend me from all the snares of the cunning enemy [Ephesians 6:11–12; 1 Peter 5:8]. Amen.

117 All the holy disciples of the Lord and his holy successors, pray for me:

Holy doorkeepers,
Holy martyrs,
Holy confessors,
Holy virgins,
Holy anchorites,
Holy monks,
Holy clerics,
Holy laypeople,
Holy wives,
Holy widows,
Holy masters,
Holy servants,
Holy rich people,
Holy poor people,
Holy workers,

119 May these and all the saints of God, together with the perfect Trinity, be the armour of my soul and body [Ephesians 6:11–17], protecting all my limbs and joints, within and without, from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head: my sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch; my flesh and blood; all my bones, sinews, entrails, veins, marrow and limbs. May they preserve me from death, for through you, Lord, all my members are brought to life, given breath and healed.

120 Protect me, Lord, on my right and on my left, before me and behind me, beneath me and above me; in the air, on land in the waters and sea; when I bend and when I stand upright, when I walk and when I stand still, when I sleep and when I wake, in every movement, on every day, at every hour, in every place, every night and throughout all the days of my life.

121 Guard me and help me, O God, Trinity, almighty God: Adonai, Araton, Osya, Eloim, Helyim, Elon, Sabaoth, Ele, Eleria and Subdia.

122 Lord God, immutable and eternal, that is, Emmanuel, Christ Jesus [Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23], deliver me, almighty God, from every danger on land water, and from the apparitions of all beasts, birds, four-footed creatures and reptiles. Defend me, Lord, from fire, lightning, thunder, hail, snow, rain, dangers, earthquakes and every evil; from poisons, envy and evil eyes and ears; from the dangers of the lake and of darkness; from demons, from the arrow that flies by day and from the pestilence that walks in darkness [Psalm 91:5–6].

123 Defend me, Lord, from all the snares and slanders of those who wish to harm me.

124 Protect me, Lord, from every evil, from anger and from whoever assails the good.

125 I confess and lay bare before you, my Creator, all the sins I have committed from the beginning of my life until this hour, and all my vices: pride, sevenfold vainglory, fierce anger, sadness, sevenfold avarice, the eighth vice, gluttony, and fornication. For I am filled with these and their armies.

126 But I repent of these things, cast them out of myself and renounce all my sins, great as they are, which I have committed in body and soul, against myself and my neighbour, in thought, word and deed. I write them down in order so that they may be erased, and I confess my sins against myself so that you may forgive the guilt of my sin [Psalm 32:5]. For I am a sinner, born of sin [Psalm 51:5], whereas God is without sin.

127 I beg the Father through the Son; I beg the Son through the Father; I beg the Holy Spirit through the Father and the Son, and through every creature that praises the Lord in word and deed, that all vices may be removed far from me and all holy virtues planted within me.

128 O immeasurable God, in whom are all things, through whom are all things, and from whom all things were made, visible and invisible [Romans 11:36; Colossians 1:16], you who extend over all things above and sustain them beneath, surrounding your works from without and filling them from within.

129 Guard me, Lord God Almighty, your creature whom you have formed, who renounces Satan and all his pomps and works, and believes in you, God the Father, the true and only almighty God. I give you thanks always for my entire life, for all my health and sickness, for all the vices of my soul and body, and for the countless offences I have committed against you.

130 I beg to you, Lord, for those who persecute and falsely accuse me. Lord Jesus, do not hold this sin against them, for they do not know what they are doing [Luke 23:34].

131 Deliver me, Lord God Almighty, from this distress and from every evil, from sudden and unexpected death, before death and at the hour of death, from everlasting death hereafter, and after death from all evil and punishment. Deliver me, Lord God Almighty, and all Christian people. Amen.

132 Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Our Father. I believe in God.

133 Lord God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth [Genesis 1:1], graciously hear my prayer, which I have sung as I beg and implore your majesty on behalf of your male and female servants. Grant us life and health in this world, and, after our souls have departed, eternal life and rest with all the saints, and your grace without end. Amen.

134 Deign to receive my confession, Holy Trinity, Lord God Almighty, the one true and eternal hope of my salvation, which I, a sinner, pour out before your goodness and mercy. I confess that I have sinned through gluttony, drunkenness, lust, lechery, impurity, sadness, sloth, sleepiness, anger, covetousness, envy, malice, hatred, slander, lying, perjury, vainglory, frivolity and pride, lustful desire, avarice, negligence, immodest looks, wicked and impure thoughts, corrupt and idle speech, perverse deeds, fornication, and sinful and unjust pleasure and consent. I have become guilty and culpable of every vice, iniquity and impurity, more than I can conceive in my heart, express with my mouth or measure in thought. But you, God, who do not desire the death of a sinner, but rather that he should turn to you and live [Ezekiel 18:23, 32; 33:11], who justify the ungodly [Romans 4:5] and give life to the dead [Romans 4:17], deign to justify me and raise me to life through your great mercy and eternal grace. Amen.
