On the Situation of Durham

·154 words·1 min

1 This town is famous throughout the kingdom of Britain;
its steep places are established; stones all around
have grown wondrously. Around it there runs
a river strong in waves, and within it dwell
many kinds of fish amid the floods.
And there has grown up a great fastness of woods;
many wild beasts dwell in those quarters,
in deep valleys, countless numbers of beasts.
In that city also, as is made known to men,
are the pious and blessed Cuthbert; and the head
of the pure king
Oswald, protector of the English, and Bishop Aidan,
Eadberht and Eadfrith, noble companions.
Within it with them is Bishop Æthelwold,
and the famous scholar Bede, and Abbot Boisil,
who eagerly taught
the pure Cuthbert, and he well received his teaching.
And within the minster rest with the blessed man
unnumbered relics,
honoured by many wonders, as writings tell,
with the man of the Lord awaiting judgement.
