The Prayer of Gildas for a Safe Journey

·315 words·2 mins

1 I hasten to seek with all urgency
the greatest help of God the Father.
I implore the aid of Jesus Christ,
who was born of the Virgin Mary.
May I always be under the protection
of the Holy Spirit, here or in exile.

2 May Christ take away all dangers from me,
along with every arrow of the demons.
May neither enemies nor robbers seize me,
nor thieves nor the plunderers of the world.
May the waves of the sea, nor the rivers,
nor any waters with their spirits, harm me.

3 May neither darkness nor winds nor floods
trouble me when my sails are full
and the winds are favorable.
May I be freed from all the dangers of the sea.

4 May Christ overcome for me
the fierce and deadly beasts of land and water.
May He defeat the arrows that fly in the air,
may He conquer all the lightning and thunder.
May He overcome the venom of serpents,
and the cruel sorceries of the world.

5 So that none of these, which we have named,
may bring harm to me or my companions.
May I be kept safe, and my companions too,
so that we may journey unharmed, without loss.

6 May our ship be sound upon the waves of the sea,
may our horses be strong upon the roads of the land.
May our wealth be carried safely,
that it may serve our needs.

7 May our enemies do us no harm,
even if they plot evil against us.
In the eternal name of Christ,
may all my paths be open before me.

8 If I ascend the steep heights of the mountains,
if I descend into the deep valleys,
if I travel across the vastest plains,
or through the densest thickets of the forests,
may my road be straight and clear
all the way to my destined place.
