Praise of St. Patrick

·1114 words·6 mins

1 Listen, you lovers of God, as I tell you about Patrick the Bishop,
A man blessed by the Lord, a hero of virtuous deeds;
For the good he does on earth, he is compared to angels,
For his flawless life, he stands as a peer of the Apostles.

2 Every detail of Christ’s commandments, he faithfully keeps;
Bright in the world’s view, the light of his deeds shines;
Truly wondrous and holy is the example he sets, and people follow,
Praising the Lord for all of it, giving thanks to the Father above.

3 He is steadfast in reverence for his Creator; his faith remains unshaken;
As firm as the Church, built upon Peter, stands;
God has granted him the role of Apostle within it,
And against it, the gates of hell will never prevail.

4 The Master has chosen him to be a teacher to distant peoples,
Skilled in the truth, like a fisherman casting his net,
To draw the believing from the waves of the world into grace,
Guiding them to follow their Lord, all the way to His throne in the heavens.

5 The talents he offers belong to Christ, the precious gift of good news,
Taking them back from our people, multiplying their worth;
For the reward of his work, for the price of his generous labor,
He will one day share in Christ’s joy in His heavenly kingdom.

6 Faithful in service to God, he is God’s most glorious messenger,
A model and example of what an Apostle should be,
Preaching with both word and deed to those whom God calls to His people,
So that, if words are not enough, his actions may urge them toward good.

7 Christ’s glory is His to keep, yet on earth, He is honored,
Worshiped by all who see, like an angel of God;
For just as Paul was sent to the Gentiles, so God has sent him as His Apostle,
Guiding the steps of people toward the Kingdom of God.

8 Humble in both spirit and body, the fear of his Creator fills him,
Though the Lord delights in resting His love upon his soul;
In his sinless flesh, he carries the mark of the Master,
Patiently enduring, never boasting except in the Cross.

9 Dauntless and tireless, he nourishes the faithful with heavenly feasts,
So that those who walk with Christ do not grow weary on their journey,
Providing for all the bread of the Gospel,
Just as the manna of old multiplied in his hands.

10 Chaste for the love of his Lord, he carefully keeps his body,
Formed and adorned as a temple fit for the Spirit of God;
Indeed, the Spirit forever dwells in works that are pure,
And he offers himself as a living and acceptable sacrifice to God.

11 He is the light of the world, set ablaze as foretold in the Gospel,
Placed on a stand, shining brightly for all to see:
He is the stronghold of the King, a city positioned high on the hill,
With abundant treasures, stored up for the Lord of all.

12 Surely Patrick will be called the greatest in the heavenly kingdom,
He who, by his holy teachings, leads others to act with goodness;
A pattern and model for all, he leads the way for the faithful,
Remaining pure in heart, always trusting in God.

13 Boldly, he proclaims the name of the Lord to the unbelieving nations,
Granting them endless grace from the water of life.
Day after day, he prays to God on their behalf for their sins,
Offering up worthy sacrifices for the health of their souls.

14 He scorns worldly praise so that God’s law may be upheld,
Standing at God’s table, seeing all as worthless in comparison;
Though the thunder of this world may crash, he remains unshaken,
Rejoicing in the storm of injustice, knowing he suffers for Christ.

15 He is a shepherd, faithful and true to the flock that the Gospel has entrusted to him,
Chosen by God Himself to be a guardian of His people,
Appointed to feed His people with teachings sent from heaven,
Risking his life for the flock, following the example of Christ.

16 The Savior has appointed him as Bishop because of his merits,
A guide to the priests, leading them in the service of God,
Providing them with clothing and sustenance from heaven’s abundance,
Delivering holy, divine teachings, fulfilling his duty completely.

17 Behold, to the faithful, he carries the summons of the King to His wedding feast,
Dressed in the bridal robe, clothed in the garment of grace.
He draws heavenly wine without measure from celestial vessels,
Inviting God’s people to come to the heavenly cup.

18 Hidden in the holy Scriptures, he discovered a sacred treasure,
Beholding the Godhead clearly revealed in the Savior’s flesh,
His merits, holy and complete, earned the treasure he sought.
He is called the “Warrior of God,” gazing upon God with his soul.

19 He is a faithful witness of the Lord in Catholic teaching.
The teachings carefully treasured, seasoned with the divine message,
So that man’s flesh may never decay into food for the earth’s worms,
But kept fresh by the heavenly grace, to be offered to God.

20 He is a noble and loyal laborer in the field of the Gospel,
Sowing the seeds of Christ’s good news before the eyes of the world,
Sowing with lips that God guards, planting seeds in the ears of the cautious,
Making their hearts and minds the fertile soil of God’s Spirit.

21 Christ has chosen him for Himself; His representative here, He has appointed,
Setting prisoners free from the grasp of two tyrants,
Ransoming slaves from the chains of men who once held them captive,
Liberating countless souls from Satan’s dominion.

22 He sings hymns and psalms to the Lord, in harmony with St. John’s Revelations,
Chanting to hasten his work, building the people of God.
He entrusts to them the law in the Name of the Triune God,
Teaching that the Persons are Three, yet the Substance of God is one.

23 Clothed with the belt of God, he prays day and night without ceasing,
His prayer rising continually to his Lord and God;
Great is the toil, and certain the reward for his labor,
Authority alongside the Twelve over the people of God.

24 Listen, you lovers of God, as I tell you about Patrick the Bishop,
Man whom the Lord has blessed, a hero of holy deed;
Because of the good he does on earth, he is compared to angels,
Because of his life without fault, he stands as a peer to the Apostles.
