Christ in our Island

·194 words·1 min

1 Christ was revealed in our island called Ireland,
showing to the people great and wondrous miracles,
which He accomplished through the blessed Virgin,
who was distinguished by her great merit in the circle of the world.

2 This hymn speaks of the angelic and most holy Saint Brigid.
It is not able to tell of all the wonderful virtues
which, if they were ever performed, we have never heard of
except through this Virgin, resembling the holy Mary.

3 She was accustomed to gird her holy loins with the belt of holy warfare,
through her daily and nightly diligence.
After the contest was completed, she took the palm of victory,
shining with great brilliance, like the sun at the summit of the heavens.

4 Hear the praises of the Virgin, also her holy merits.
The perfection she promised was bravely fulfilled.
She pledged herself to be the mother of Christ by words and deeds,
and Brigid, beloved, is the true Queen of God.

5 Holy Brigid, may she diligently be in our aid,
so that we may deserve to have the crown and joy,
in the presence of the angels, forever and ever.
